We departed by bus to the Lyon airport which took 1 hour and 45 minutes. From there we flew to Madrid via Lisbon, Portugal for the Southern Spain portion of our trip. After spending 4 days in Madrid we went to Toledo, stopped in Cordoba to see La Mezquita (another Wonder of the World), Sevilla, Arcos de la Frontera that included a day driving through Andalucía’s white hill towns, Tarifa & a day in Tangers, Morocco, a stop in Gibraltar, UK on our way to Nerja, then on to Granada & La Alhambra – which was one of the runner ups for the New 7 Wonders of the World – then to Chiva & Buñol for La Tomatina with the grand finale in Barcelona. We ended up there for 4 days which was never our intention, however, when you use points to fly you’re at the airlines mercy. My best piece of advice is to “Save Barcelona for last.” It was wonderful!

We flew from Rome to Marseille where we were met at the airport and taken by van to Arles, France to board our Uniworld Rhône River Cruise. We got to walk in Vincent Van Gogh’s footsteps, saw Pont du Gard (a Wonder of the World) outside of Avignon & had a Châteauneuf-du-pape wine tasting, then went on to Viviers, Tournon/Tain l’Hermitage, Lyon, Chalon sur Saône and Beaune, France. We ended the trip with a lunch and wine tasting at Chateau de Pommard which had some pretty incredible artwork on display. This was the first time we had ever cruised with them and it was a wonderful river experience. We’re planning on cruising with them again when we do Russia in 2014.

We boarded our ship in Barcelona for a 7 day cruise in the Mediterranean. Our stops included Rosas, Spain – Sète, St. Tropez, & Monte Carlo, France – Cinque Terra, Portoferraio, Island of Elba, & Rome Italy. We enjoyed taking a tour to the Gala Dalí Castle House in Pubol. Salvador Dalí bought the castle 1970 for his wife Gala.

Here are some of our favorite pictures from the first portion of our trip. We drove from Barcelona to SOS Del Rey Catolíco, then to Pamplona for the Running of the Bulls, then Hondarribia, San Sebastian, Bilboa, Cangas de Onís, Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca, Ávila, Segovia, Sigüenza and Alcaníz before heading back to Barcelona to catch our cruise ship.
