FUN-travel: Dead Horse Point & Canyonlands

May 18, 2018 by

  • Dead Horse Point – offers a dramatic overlook of the convergence of the Colorado & Green Rivers…

…and panoramic views of Canyonlands.

FUN-fact – Legend has it that Dead Horse Point was used as a corral for wild mustangs roaming the mesa top. Cowboys herded them across the narrow neck of land and onto the point. The neck was then fenced off with branches and brush. One time, for some unknown reason, horses were left corralled on the waterless point where they died of thirst within view of the Colorado River 2,000 feet below.

More FF – Dead Horse State Park is where they shot the final ‘Grand Canyon’ scene of Thelma & Louise.

  • Canyonlands – the Island in the Sky District … more colorful canyons…                                            …mesas… buttes… fins… arches & spires…with water & gravity….                                                              … being the prime architects… sculpting layers of rock.

  • Mesa Arch – one of the most iconic vistas…on the edge of a 500-foot cliff…

…part of a 1,200-foot drop into Buck Canyon.

  • Schafer Canyon Overlook – like a narrow peninsula …jutting out over the canyon.

FUN-fact – Canyonlands is over 4 times the size of Arches.
