Word-Of-the-Week #643: Appropriate

Appropriate – the right thing to do.

Do you always do what is appropriate? If you found a wallet with $1500.00 in cash, plus credit cards and ID what would you do? Would you turn it in to the police? Would you be tempted to keep it?

San Diego Union writer Michael Stetz’s column titled, “Take the high road: Give that cash back,” caught my attention.

Apparently $225,000 from a drug sting operation ended up on the freeway during the evening rush hour. The money was thrown out of the window shortly before the high speed chase ended. The feds say only $40,000 has been turned in.

He didn’t think twice about what to do. He didn’t tuck the money away. He got hold of the owner. “It’s the right thing to do,” he said. “It was the way I was brought up.”

Stetz continued, “Every now and then, a story like his comes up. The people who give the money back seem to have one thing in common – a conviction to do what’s right, regardless of the temptation,” writes Stetz.  His column ends with him telling the freeway money-grabbers to turn the money back in. “You’ll feel better. It doesn’t matter how bad the times are. A wrong is never a right.”

This week’s focus is on doing what is appropriate. Do you have a conviction to do what’s right, regardless of the temptation? I truly believe that what goes around comes around. If you take something that is not yours you will pay dearly somewhere down the road. (No pun intended) And we’re back to that Karma thing!
