Word Of the Week #565: Perception

June 3, 2015 by

Perception: the way you see, think about, or understand something.

Have you ever heard that perception is reality? Did you ever see the movie “Life is Beautiful?” Do you remember how Roberto Benigni plays the father who must employ his fertile imagination to shield his son from the horrors of internment in a Nazi concentration camp by making everything a game? Did you know that part of the film came from Benigni’s own family history; before Roberto’s birth, his father had survived three years of internment at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp?

This week long time friend Joe shares his thoughts on last week’s Reality WOW. “Her success is even more impressive because of her background. Sade created her own reality and followed through on what SHE BELIEVED she could do. An incredible person.

It is young people like Sade who will influence the next generation. Many young ladies from similar backgrounds will look up to her and say, “If Sade can do it, so can I.” We all need more positive examples and role models like Sade who can show young people what is possible in this life.

While neither of my parents is a college graduate, that was something that never came into mind as to whether I could earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in my life. Or whether I could write a book. I learned to see my abilities and my reality different from other people.

a perception

Reality can also be a cruel reminder that things will not always go our way. It is life, but we learn to find another way to achieve our goals in our lives.

What I have found in my life is that those who have never really achieved anything in their lives are usually the people who are the naysayers. They usually don’t know what it takes to get things done or have never had the desire to be anything other than what they are.

As hard as it is to shut the naysayers out of our lives, we must do it. Because it is we who determine our lives and our futures, not the naysayers. And once we have achieved what it is we set out to do, it is the naysayers who are the first in line to say that they knew we could do it all along.

Great word, Susan. There is so much to do and we have to get to it.

And that is the biggest challenge. Finding the courage and determination to go after what you want regardless of what other people think or say you’re capable of.

This week’s focus is all about perception. Do you feel confidence in the way you see yourself and your understanding of things? How many times have you seen things differently than someone else? Are you capable of seeing your abilities (instead of your limits) and creating the reality you want?
